The establishment of the museum of one of the most prominent poets of Serbian romanticism Jovan Jovanović Zmaj (1833-1904) is closely connected to establishment and activities of the “Zmaj”, formed in 1904.

The house in Sremska Kamenica, in which the poet spent his last days of life, was adapted and open for visits in 1933. At the same time the monument “Deca čika Jovi”, the work of sculptor Stevan Stojanović, was uncovered. The care and maintenance of the museum was assigned to Leposava Jovanović, the last descendent of the family. After rare desolations, the museum was updated and reopened in 1957, when the Festival of Children’s Poetry “Zmajeve dečije igre” was also established. Since 1958 it has been part of The City Museum of Novi Sad.

The permanent exhibition is formed in a way that it presents smaller entireties – the poet’s family life, his literature and public work, his work on children’s poetry, his works published after his death, books and magazines about Zmaj written by various writers and scientists and Zmaj as a doctor. In a separate building there are the publications of Zmaj’s work after the war on languages of the peoples and nationalities of SFRJ, the translations on Polish and Russian, books and magazines on Zmaj’s literature work, as well as the materials from „Zmajeve dečije igtre“ held up to now. In 1973, in the park of The Memorial Museum a bust “Zmaj i dete” by Ivan Meštrović was situated.

Working hours: 9am – 4pm (Monday to Friday); 9am – 2pm (on Sundays).

Group visits should be announced a couple of days before the arrival.
