MONUMENT “KIPOVI”

Monument “Kipovi” (Statues) are situated on a road between Ruma and Irig. They were built as a reminiscence of a successful struggle against the plague epidemic that stalked across Srem in 1795 and 1796. The watches (sanitary cordon) were organized on that place, which were preventing the entrance to the infected town, Irig, and other way around. Consequently, this is one of the rare monuments related to the health culture in this part of Europe. The monument is situated on both left and right sides of the road between Ruma and Irig. The monument on the left side was built in the shape of baroque Roman Catholic altar, while the monument on the right side is consisted of plain columns of a circular base. It represents provincial brickwork enhanced with stone sculptures. There is a statue representing Jesus Christ on the top of the higher group of columns and, below it, you can see a female figure in a kneeling position on the left and the figure of the Roman soldier in the same position on the right.
